Dane County Northeast Communities:

  DEFOREST-  DeForest is located 10 minutes northeast of Madison, via Interstate 90/94/39 or HWY 51.  It is called the "North Star of Dane County- Where the Fun Begins."  With a population of over 8,000, it is a rural community within easy driving distance of Madison.  According to the Village of DeForest website, the residents pride themselves on their sense of community and their know-your-neighbor philosophy, which they are working to keep intact as the area grows.  DeForest has scenic walking and biking trails, 26 beautiful parks, a performing arts center, a state of the art library, and well ranked schools.  The Village website includes street maps and useful information for local residents.  The Dragon Arts Group hosts an annual arts fair and other events in DeForest.  See their website and the DeForest Community Calendar for a list of area events.  The DeForest Chamber of Commerce site includes information on relocating to the area, local employment, housing, local resources, and a wealth of other information.  For information on local schools, see the Deforest Area School District.  The DeForest Area Public Library website includes an explanation of why the building is decorated with dragons, as well as information on library services.

 
SUN PRAIRIE-  Sun Prairie is located only a few miles northeast of Madison along HWY 151, offering a smaller town community atmosphere within a short commute to larger city amenities.  With over 24,000 residents, Sun Prairie boasts an extensive park system, including baseball diamonds, skating rinks, sledding hills, soccer fields, a skateboard park, public golf courses, and a huge family acquatic center.  Patrick Marsh offers tranquil walks along the northeast side of the city.  Sun Prairie is also home to the Angel Park Speedway and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.  The Sun Prairie Historical Museum recounts the area's heritage and includes an exhibit on well known American artist, Georgia O'Keefe, who was born in the area.  For information on the active Senior Center, see the Colonial Club.  The city is also known for its Groundhog Day celebration (see their Groundhog Central website devoted to Jimmy the Groundhog) and its annual Sweet Corn Festival, which has been designated as one of Discover Wisconsin's favorite small town festivals.  For more information, see the Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce site, the City of Sun Prairie government site (which includes details on their New Resident Packet), and the Visit Sun Prairie tourist site.  For school information, see the Sun Prairie School District.
