BELLEVILLE- A small and picturesque village southwest of Madison along HWY 69, nestled on the banks of Lake Belle View. Belleville began in 1845 with the establishment of a sawmill on the lake and quickly grew into a village. The Ice Age Trail goes through the Village, and its natural resources are preserved in its 70 acres of parks. Enjoy Belleville's UFO Days, a festival commemorating a local UFO sighting. The Belleville Chamber of Commerce website includes a resource guide for newcomers, information on Belleville schools, and more. The Village straddles the boundary of both Dane and Green County. With its short and easy commute to Madison (only 14 miles to the Beltline), Belleville is becoming more and more popular in the real estate market.
NEW GLARUS- New Glarus is a charming and beautiful town nestled among wooded hills. It is 27 miles southwest of Madison along HWY 69 and 8 miles southwest of Belleville. "America's Little Switzerland," New Glarus was settled by Swiss immigrants. The Villagers proudly maintain their Swiss heritage and invite you to share in their traditions. Enjoy the Swiss style architecture, the emphasis on fine dining, and edible Swiss treats such as schnitzel. Several annual festivals celebrate Swiss holidays and stories, such as the Heidi Festival in June, Volksfest in August, and the Wilhelm Tell Festival on Labor Day weekend. These events include a glimpse of traditional culture, music, folk costumes, and even yodeling. Learn more about the area's Swiss heritage at the local museums, the Swiss Historical Village, which brings to life the history of early Swiss settlers, and the Chalet of the Golden Fleece, an authentic replica of a Swiss chalet. Other recreational opportunities include specialty shopping, a community pool, and nearby New Glarus Woods State Park, offering residents 411 acres of camping, hiking, picnicking, snow shoeing, and restored prairie. See also the Township of New Glarus website.
MONROE- The Village of Monroe is the Green County seat. It has a population of over 11,000 and is located further along HWY 69, past New Glarus, 40 miles from Madison. It too was settled by Swiss immigrants who began a cheese business there that has thrived to the present day. Monroe is now known as the Swiss Cheese Capital of the US. Cheese Day celebrations began in 1914 and continue to be held every even year. Monroe's historic downtown courthouse square includes a beautiful courthouse built in 1891, the nation's second oldest continually operating brewery, speciality shops, and more. The Monroe Arts Center sponsors an entertainment season, gallery exhibits, and more, in a beautifully restored church building. Activities at Turner Hall help preserve and promote the area's Swiss Heritage. See the Monroe Chamber of Commerce site for more information.
